Science of Music How it Works

The proven power and impact of music and sound as a credible method for affecting how we function has grown dramatically over the past 40 years. Music and sound interventions have successfully been used in the fields of medicine, psychology, athletics, law enforcement, personal development, and many others to help facilitate some desired objective.

After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.

Research has shown many positive clinical findings. For example, music and sound have been shown to have many practical and clinical applications to:

  • Manage pain during operations and other medical procedures.
  • Enhance healing.
  • Stimulate brain activity and help increase memory and speech abilities in patients with brain disorders or problems such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Enhance athletic performance and endurance.
  • Treat depression, ADHD, and other psychological/physiological disorders.
  • Reduce physical stress and anxiety.
  • Assist people who have insomnia or difficulty sleeping to turn off mind chatter and fall into deep and regenerative sleep patterns.
  • Stimulate feelings of courage, confidence, peace, love, patience, and other helpful mental and emotional states that help enable people gain greater control over their lives and interactions with others
  • Assist people who are going through transitions in their lives to find strength, hope and peace as they work through various challenges and opportunities.

The incredible reality is that understanding and managing the audio environment can become a powerful force for managing life and shaping circumstances. Music and sound can be deliberately used to live and experience the very best parts of life in a way that most people never thought possible.

A key to deliberately using the power of music and sound for more effective functioning is the ability to identify and use music and sounds that take us into a specific, desired state. Nuphonics music and sound compositions are scientifically and artistically designed to do just that. While most audio compositions are designed to be entertaining, Nuphonics audio compositions are designed to be both entertaining and to have a specific, beneficial affect.

How does it work?

The creation of movement and the process of imprinting

How can music and sound be designed to have such a powerful effect upon life experiences? The answers lie in the scientific structuring of music and sound (i.e. audio science) and in its artistic arrangement to create a transitioning of the listener into a desired state.

In simple and basic terms, music and sound create “movement” or a transfer of energy, along with facilitating chemical reactions which result in an outcome to be compared to photo “imprinting.” The affects of movement and imprinting are quick and powerful by facilitating changes in mental, emotional, and physical states of functioning that become drivers of actions, behaviors, and outcomes. The affects of this movement and imprinting can be either positive or negative. Different sounds, arrangements, and frequency patterns affect thoughts, emotions, brainwave activity, and other aspects of physiology in unique ways that facilitate different types of behaviors and outcomes. Our job is to find and use those patterns that positively help us achieve our goals and objectives.

Movement and Entrainment

Sound and music are made up of vibration sound waves or “energy” that resonates from a source, travels outward, and interacts with other things in the environment. Just as music and sound can act upon glass, the use of different vibration levels and frequencies, rhythm, beat, tempo, harmony, and other sound and musical elements have power to act upon our minds, emotions, and bodies, effectively causing them to move in sync with the music, mood, and sounds. This process is more formally know as the process of entrainment. Our internal state is literally affected by the outside stimuli of the music or sound and synchronizes with it! In this way, the vibration frequencies and patterns of the music along with the tone that they establish interact with us and “move” us into rhythm and sync with them.

Again, although there is a direct scientific cause and effect for how this happens, the fact that it happens becomes evident from personal experience and observation. Simply turn on some music and notice how quickly your hands and feet begin tapping in sync with the beat. Attend a rock concert and notice how consistently the music affects the movements and behaviors of the audience. Music and sound are all about movement and that movement has a direct impact on how we feel and function.

Imprinting

In addition to movement, music and sound stimulate the release of powerful chemicals, called endorphins, which leave long-lasting imprints upon us. Deep emotions are associated with this imprinting process. These endorphins affect our physical state and help create conditions for healing, effective action, and other beneficial things. Hollywood has done an exceptional job of using music and sounds within movies to cause the audience to “experience” the movie as if they were actively a part of it. The audio track of the movie helps create the powerful emotions that enable the audience to actually “experience” what is being portrayed in the movie. Take out the audio portion of the movie and you take away much of its emotion and meaning. Thus, the key dynamics of movement or “motion” and “emotion” work together to affect our states of functioning and our accompanying result or outcomes.

The Triggers of Motion and Emotion

There has been much progress made in the fields of science and medicine that explains how movement and emotional imprinting affect how we feel and function. For example, Dr. Henry S. Lodge of Columbia University has pointed out some key relationships between lifestyle—life choices—and how quickly the body ages. In the book Younger Next Year, Dr. Lodge explains what he calls the new biology of aging. He indicates that the body is designed to biologically age very slowly and gracefully. However, daily lifestyle choices send the message to either “grow” or “decay” out to the body’s cells which inhibit or enhance the aging process. His research indicates that there are two master signaling systems that tell cells to either grow or decay.

Motion

The first master signaling system that tells cells to grow or decay has to do with motion. Humans are designed to move. Exercise, or putting our bodies in motion, signals to cells the message to grow. Inactivity or sedentary living signals to cells the message of decay. Whichever message is sent, it affects cells universally throughout the body. Since humans naturally replace cells daily, the creation of new, healthy cells that results from active movement can significantly affect the body’s capacity to function in a matter of weeks and months.

Emotion

The other master signal which tells cells to grow is emotion. Interestingly enough, emotion has been shown to positively or negatively affect cell growth through the same molecular pathway as exercise. Negative emotions such as anger, stress, and loneliness actually create signals that tell cells to decay just as directly as sedentary living does. By choosing to fill our lives with positive emotions (such as hope, confidence, connection, optimism, love, and other positive emotions) we direct our bodies to grow just as surely as physical exercise.

As music and sound directly affect both areas of motion and emotion, the potential benefits from positively directing the audio environment are exciting and great. A daily audio workout that positively affects the mind, the emotions, and the body can have a very direct and literal affect on a person’s quality of life and circumstances.

Transitioning

Nuphonics products are designed to stimulate positive motion and emotion that in turn affects performance and functioning. The more effective people are at transitioning between and within positive desired states of functioning, the more effective they will be at achieving their important goals and objectives.

Some specific types of daily functioning that require effective transitioning include:

  • Rest, healing, and regeneration. This includes sleep, relaxation, de-stressing, etc. in which the body heals and regenerates.
  • Emotional connection and well being. This includes positive emotions of openness, understanding, love, hope, optimism, vision, and gratitude by which we interact with and connect to others in life.
  • Learning and growth: This includes active thinking, learning, and reflection that allows for growth, character development, and self-mastery.
  • Activity and performance. This includes daily activity and performance that leads to achievement and successful outcomes.
Positive Affects:

Through deliberate use, music and sound can help people with the daily transitions listed above. It can become a powerful, and an enjoyable, means of experiencing many wonderful dimensions of life. It has the power to alter brain wave activity, stimulate powerful imagery, shift emotions, and affect the physical functioning of the listener. Used alone, or in combination with other powerful tools like exercise, good nutrition, meditation, visualization, and caring for others, it can become a powerful tool for helping listeners to experience the very best parts of life.

Note:While scientifically designed audio compositions can provide help for listeners in many areas, they are not intended to take the place of the advice and treatments of clinical professionals. It is recommended that listeners use audio interventions as a healthy part of an overall improvement plan that works within the scope and guidelines of any medical or other professional treatment plan.
